Computer Technology

The Computer Technology program at Foothills Academy complements the school’s mission and the academic curriculum. Computers are used as hands-on tools to teach both basic and higher-order thinking skills, integrate various subjects, and provide lifelong learning skills. They provide an alternative teaching method for different learners and allow for a self-directed approach to learning. The goal of the program is to have the appropriate quality and quantity of computers, with the latest software and Internet access in every classroom, where they will be used to enhance curriculum. All students should be comfortable and knowledgeable about current computer technology and software.

Computer use should fit the student’s level of maturation and cognitive development. Basic computer research skills are introduced accordingly.

Kindergarten, First, and Second-Grade students have access to computers for research, writing, educational software, and games. At this level, computers do not play a major role in the student’s learning.

Third and Fourth-Grade students use the computer to support their math learning, conduct research, and write reports.

Fifth and Sixth-Grade students become knowledgeable about how the computer works. Keyboard skills are taught and practiced. Students are expected to write reports, mastering graphic and word-processing software.

Seventh and Eighth-Grade students use the computer for research and development of papers and a wide variety of projects, including design of a glider – using specially designed software -- for a science/art project. At this level, the computer is an essential tool for success in school.

Ninth-through-Twelfth-Grade students take advantage of all the latest applications of computer technology for use in research and development of more sophisticated presentational elements in their reports and papers of all kinds.
