The specific goals of the Theater Program include:
- Using drama for classroom interpretation and making drama a natural and integral part of every curriculum
- Developing students verbal abilities to present ideas and opinions in a fluent and persuasive manner, culminating in forensics
- Developing students self confidence
- Understanding theatrical terms and the origins, history, periods, benchmarks, genres, styles, and influence of Western theater, from third-century Greece to contemporary theater
- Providing an overview of world theater, and comparing and contrasting it to Western theater
- Understanding and interpreting dramatic works
- Providing the opportunity to participate and perform in theatrical productions
- Practicing basic theatrical concepts of posturing, projecting, emoting, focusing, and improvising
- Introducing basic stage craft, including types of staging, stage movement and direction set design, lighting, costumes, and makeup, and
- Thinking of drama as small and spontaneous as well as rehearsed and performed before an audience.
